Musician & Environmental Activist Bob Weir Becomes The Alliance’s First International Ambassador

Bob Weir
It was Bob Weir who said, “Looking back, I guess I have lived an unusual life.” From founding one of the greatest rock bands of all time, to being appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador last year, we’re inclined to believe he’s right. His journey will now include another unique accomplishment, becoming the Green Schools Alliance first international ambassador.

Bob WeirBob began his musical journey at the age of thirteen playing guitar. After a series of club gigs and contact with musicians including Jerry Garcia, David Nelson, and Jorma Kaukonen, a band called The Warlocks was formed, which eventually transformed into the iconic group we know now as the Grateful Dead. Still actively touring with Dead & Company, Bob is internationally renowned as one of rock’s finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists.

Bob has received quite a few notable awards over the course of his successful career spanning over 50 years. These accolades include induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He is also the subject of two popular documentaries—the Netflix original The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir and Amazon's Long Strange Trip—which chronicle his storied career. However, Bob’s accomplishments reach beyond his musical prowess. For his commitment and dedication to environmental activism, he received the honor of appointment to United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, where he is focusing efforts to fight climate change and end global poverty.

In an interview with Billboard, Bob stated, “I’d like to see climate change and the ongoing diminishing of biodiversity arrested and dealt with to the point where the sustainability of life on earth isn’t threatened. I’d also like to see people reflexively consider the good of the planet in the choices they regularly make.”

Music and the environment have always been intrinsically linked. Were the first songs of the Earth not the humming of birds or chirping of crickets? Are lyrics crafted from the hearts of humans not representative of our passions and hope for the world we live in?

We are proud to announce that Bob Weir’s journey will now include another unique accomplishment, becoming the Green Schools Alliance’s first international ambassador. His passion and commitment to the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals and advocacy work in the digital action space make him a great fit with the Alliance.

Green Schools Alliance is passionate about bringing together environmental champions across oceans, industries, boundaries, and communities to create a united force for impactful change to protect our planet. We sincerely hope Bob Weir will be the first of many to join us in our efforts to better our world for future generations.
