Maria's Public School

The GSA is thrilled to announce the designation of our first National Coordinator School:
Maria’s Public School (MPS) in Guwahati, Assam, India.

MPS will serve as a mentor to new member schools in India, host regional GSAx events, and assist the Alliance in developing international student and educator training programs. The collaboration will create the long-term infrastructure needed to support a GSA India Chapter. The idea for this partnership was sparked when MPS teacher Biswajit De and students Violina Das and Siddhant Agarwala attended the Student Climate & Conservation Congress (Sc3) in 2015.

MPS teaches students grades 1-12 in a biologically diverse and critical region of northeast India. It seeks to produce ethical, curious and adaptable global citizens who respect for all life forms. MPS provides a concrete platform for joyful learning and holistic development. It values hands-on, experiential learning, and includes nature studies in its curriculum.

Biswajit DeBiswajit De is MPS' Creative Director and teaches Design and Media Studies to the students in its Senior Secondary Section. Specializing in animation and graphic design, he engages his students with activities related to biodiversity awareness and conservation through art, using such media as poster design, graphic novellas, photography and film. Mr. De is in charge of various sustainability initiatives for the school and often involves students in bio-diversity survey-based field trips.

In 2014, Mr. De won the Global Teachers Accreditation Award from the British Council for his Action Research Project: Creating Teacher Leaders to Impart Global Awareness Through Innovative Teaching of Biology. The GTA Accreditation gave Mr. De the opportunity to integrate biodiversity awareness and conservation paradigms within the existing curriculum of his school, which is a crucial subject area for the northeast India. He is also a trainer of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Skills, a mentor to the Department of Education, Meghalaya, for schools located in the Garo Hills, and a part of the British Council Education Quality Improvement Pathways for Schools (EQUIPS) Training Team.
